The Mediveal Period was a time of war and fighting and jousting. It was full of magic, knights and kings. The story of king Arthur is a great example of what life was like. I have learned a ton about Arthurian legend, and the knight I selected Sir Bedivere through creating this website. I learned that there were many knights at the round table, and Arthur had his list of favorites. Sir Bedivere was on this list. He served as king Arthur’s marshal, and is one of the oldest knights associated with king Arthur. People say that Bedivere could be a real person, because of how long he has been in the story. Throughout the story Bedivere is side by side to Arthur. From the beginning all the way to the death of Arthur after the battle of Camalan Bedivere serves Arthur to the best of his ability. Bedivere was also I very skilled fighter, and in some versions is missing a hand, but they say he could draw blood faster than any three knights combined (Taylor). Also, some said that Bedivere had a secret friendship with a knight of the round table that used dark magic to fight his opponents and that is why he is such a skillful fighter (Fletcher). I along with many Arthurian legend readers don’t believe that he had this secret friendship because if he did use dark magic, Arthur would have easily found out and would of got rid of him.
Bedivere’s biggest contribution to the story is the returning of king Arthur’s sword Excalibur to the lady of the lake. Arthur left his kingdom to go fight Lancelot because Lancelot has taken his queen and has betrayed him. Arthur is gone for so long that Sir Mordred is able to write a fake story on how Arthur has died fighting Lancelot, and Sir Mordred takes the thrown and forces Arthur’s queen to marry him. Arthur’s queen knows that something is wrong and refuses to marry Sir Mordred. Word spreads to Arthur and he returns home to see his own army in the way back home and has to fight them. The two armies try to make peace in the middle of the battlefield but a snake bites one of the soldiers and it confuses the armies watching and causes them to charge. The battle results in many deaths and Arthur is left to fight Mordred. Arthur kills Mordred but is seriously wounded in the process. Bedivere who survived the whole battle is next to Arthur while he is dying, and Arthur instructs him to take Excalibur and bring it back to the lady of the lake. It takes Bedivere three tries before he actually throws the sword into the lake (Nash), and when he does a hand reaches up and grabs it just before it hits the water and then pulls it underneath the water. This is a huge responsibility because the sword was Arthur’s sword and held so much power.
In conclusion, Bedivere was a great knight to king Arthur. He would do anything for his king. He fought side by side with him all the way until the end. He had a very difficult task of returning Excalibur to the lady of the lake but eventually did what he was told to do. Bedivere was a very loyal and skillful knight, and Arthur should have been very proud to say that Sir Bedivere was his knight who served for him (Currin).
